The best engineers I know all have one thing in common: they know a little about a lot of things.
They aren't experts in everything, but they understand the basics of databases, network protocols, design patterns, and how different software stacks tackle hard problems.
They usually don't build this kind of breadth at work, either. They're just curious, so they read articles, watch tech talks, or dig into random topics on their lunch break.
It pays off when you least expect it. Once you understand how a dozen different systems work, you spot connections that other people miss. That's usually how creative solutions happen.
You don't need to give up your weekends to do this. Spending 20 or 30 minutes a day on whatever catches your eye is enough to make a noticeable difference over a few months.
Finding the time isn't the issue, sticking with it is. But once it becomes part of your daily routine, complex technical topics stop feeling so intimidating.
